Daniels National Junior Honor Society

The selection process for the National Junior Honor Society at Daniels is based upon five ideals: leadership, service, citizenship, character, and scholarship.

A member of NJHS pledges to adopt higher ethical and behavioral standards than what is normally expected of middle school students. Membership is exclusively limited to eighth grade students. Seventh grade students, however, should be keenly aware of the importance of the ideals upheld by NJHS, and they should strive to attain and maintain those ideals throughout the school year.

At the end of their seventh grade year, students can become candidates to join the Daniels National Junior Honor Society. The criteria used to determine a student’s eligibility is as follows:

Scholarship

  • All students who have maintained a 3.5 academic grade point average for the first 2 trimesters of the seventh grade year will meet with the advisors at the beginning of the third trimester. This will let the students know that they have met the scholarship requirement set by the National Council based on a student’s cumulative grade point average and are being considered for membership in the NJHS.
  • The students will be given a Student Activity Information Form to fill out and a deadline in which to return the form. If the form is not turned in, it will be viewed that the student is not interested, and the process will end for them at that point. These forms should not be considered under any circumstances as “applications” for membership. They will be used to obtain information directly from the student regarding leadership and service activities and to elaborate on the student’s perspectives concerning the National Junior Honor Society and it values. A parent/guardian signature affirming that they have reviewed the data and verified its accuracy will be required. Other adults signatures may also be requested to verify participation in leadership or service activities. These forms are for use by the Faculty Council as working documents to be used during the selection process in support of the student’s candidacy.
  • The students must write a short essay (500 words or less) describing their interest and why they feel they qualify through leadership, service, citizenship and character to be a member for the Daniels NJHS. As with the Student Activity Information Form, the essay will be used by the Faculty Council as a working document during the selection process in support of the student’s candidacy.
  • All teachers, both academic and elective, who have had the candidates in their classrooms during the seventh grade year will be given evaluation forms to support the strength of a student’s candidacy in the areas of service, leadership, citizenship, and character and to rate each student on the NJHS ideals. These evaluations are to be used by the Faculty Council, the advisors, and the principal and are considered confidential.

Leadership

  • Able to delegate responsibilities
  • Exemplifies a positive attitude
  • Inspires positive behavior in others
  • Demonstrates leadership in the classroom and in school activities
  • Thoroughly dependable in any given responsibility

 Service

  • Willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyalty to school
  • Works well with others
  • Renders any requested service to school with enthusiasm and cheerfulness
  • Does committee/group work without complaining
  • Needs at least 12 hours community service

Citizenship

  • Contributes ideas which improve school life
  • Shows courtesy by assisting teachers, staff, visitors, and fellow students
  • Attends school extra-curricular activities
  • Demonstrates a willingness and eagerness to render service to the community through school projects

Character

  • Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations with graciousness
  • Exemplifies a desirable, pleasant personality at all times
  • Complies with school rules and regulations
  • Demonstrates the highest standard of honesty and reliability
  • Exemplifies above-reproach behavior by avoiding dishonesty, cheating, breaking rules, rudeness, disruptiveness, profiting from the mistakes of others.
  • Once the selections have been made, the NJHS advisors will invite the candidates to meet with them to learn more about the organization.
    • An induction ceremony will be held. Parents and friends are invited to attend the ceremony in addition to the seventh grade students.

It is our hope that each of you in seventh grade will strive to become a member of the Daniels National Junior Honor Society by following the ideals listed above.

Box Tops 4 Education and Ink Cartridge Recycling

The Daniels Middle School National Junior Honor Society continues to sponsor the collection of Box-Tops-4-Education and Ink Cartridge Recycling.  Enough money has been made to purchase equipment for the school, such as listening stations, computers and digital cameras.  This year they are hoping to collect even more so they are encouraging all students, parents, friends, relatives, etc. to send these in.  They will be having two contests during the months of October and February with the homeroom collecting the most Box Tops and ink cartridges receiving a continental breakfast.  The homeroom with the most collected throughout the year will earn a year-end party.

Community service hours are now being given for the collection of Box Tops.  5- Box Tops will equal one hour of community service.  The ink cartridges are equal to 10 Box Tops, so be sure and send those in as well.

We ask that all Box tops be neatly trimmed before being brought to school.  Also, please put the ink cartridges in a plastic bag so if they leak, the ink will not get on everything.
