Congratulations to the Daniels Model UN Security Council Members

Congratulations to all 32 Model UN Security Council members who did an outstanding job of representing Daniels at the Middle School Model UN Security Council Conference at Appalachian State University in Boone yesterday. Even though not everyone placed, teachers and parents alike would have been proud watching these students debate issues that are very real in the world today.

Placing first or Best Delegation representing the country of Uganda were Mihaly Lukacs and Noah Somaratne. Second place or Superior Delegation representing the country of China went to Alex Lewontin and Tanner Morgan. Third Place or Excellent Delegation also representing the country of China went to Max Clingroth and Arjun Arora. Placing fourth or Honorable Mention were Madison Sprinkle and Victoria Pediaditakis representing United Kingdom, Harrison Lee representing Russian Federation, Lilly Augspurger and Sierra Volstad representing Turkey and Augusta Moran and Maya Sproelich representing Austria.

When you see these students or for that matter any of the 32 students that went to the conference, give them a thumbs up for a job well done!

Daniels is one of two WCPSS Schools
Named as a Progress Energy SunSense Schools Finalist

Two Wake County Public School System schools are finalists in the Progress Energy SunSenseSM Schools program. Daniels Middle School and Holly Springs High School are among 12 schools across the Carolinas selected as finalists.  This program will give students and teachers in 5 schools in the Carolinas a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn more about solar energy.  The 5 winning schools will receive a solar photovoltaic system installed by Argand Solar on their campuses and students will be able to track the energy output with internet tracking equipment and learn more about the capabilities of solar PV technologies.  Progress Energy has partnered with the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ’N Community Foundation to provide this opportunity for 5 lucky schools in the Carolinas.

Now, we need the help of all Daniels staff members, students and community for Daniels to become one of the 5 winning schools!!  We would like for students, teachers, administrators, and elected officials to go to www.progressCHER.com to take an 'Energy Challenge' survey.  With the survey, Progress Energy will be able to 'gage' the interest and support that Daniels has from our staff, students and community for Green Energy. When you take the survey, you will have the opportunity to get a free customized home energy report with energy efficiency tips for your home which could potentially save your family hundreds of dollars.  When you take the survey, you will need to select “Daniels Middle” from the drop down box.  Once you are at the site linked above, you will need to register using your Progress Energy account number and zip code.  If you do not have a computer at home, please ask your science teacher for a paper copy.   Remember, the more participation Daniels has with this survey, the better chance we will have to 'win'.  So, please go to the website today (www.progressCHER.com) to help us show support from the Daniels staff, students and families for this outstanding program! Help to get the “conservation conversation” started at home and at your school.

Also, because of the generous donations of Progress Energy “SunSense” and the Carolina Hurricanes, we are giving away over 70 Carolina Hurricane Tickets between now and the Hurricanes game next Wednesday, October 28.  When you have completed your energy questionnaire, print out a copy and show it to your science teacher and your name will be submitted in a drawing.  If you are unable to print at home, just submit a letter as to what you learned from your home survey and tell how your family plans on saving energy at home.  Get the letter signed by your parents and give it to your science teacher. Two tickets will be awarded for each student winning the raffle.  Other incentives will be provided, just ask your science teacher.

If you have any questions, please contact Dean Oey, the Daniels Solar Program Coordinator at doey@wcpss.net. Go Green, Go Daniels, and Go Hurricanes!

SPAN Access Available for Parents and Students

Daniels parents have access to the Student/Parent Access Network (SPAN) software program!  SPAN allows students and parents access to data such as grades, demographics, attendance, schedules, discipline, and teacher recommendations from your home computer. Parents will need internet access and an active email account in order to establish a SPAN account. Parents will also be required by the County to verify current address and contact information upon applying for a SPAN account. In order to register for this service, a SPAN Account form must be completed. There are two ways to complete a SPAN Account form and open a SPAN account—one form can be completed and turned in at Daniels with photo identification; the other form can be completed at home, notarized, and sent to Daniels. Forms to establish a SPAN account are available in the Main Office, Student Services Offices, or you can find the forms posted below. A letter was sent home to all parents with Report Cards on Friday, December 5th informing parents of the details regarding SPAN access, and an electronic copy of that letter is posted here as well.

MRSA

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) has been in the news recently due to the death of a student in Virginia. Staph (staphylococcus aureus) is a bacteria that can be found anywhere. At any given time people can have staph in their nose or on their skin and it doesn't make them sick. However, staph can cause an illness if it enters the body through a break in the integrity of the skin such as a cut or scrape. This is why it is important to wash cuts or scrapes with mild soap and water and to keep open areas covered to prevent infections. MRSA is a form of staph which has developed, that is resistant to some of the antibiotics that are used to treat staph. It is usually a mild skin infection that can be treated successfully by a doctor.

Please see the links below to find out more information from Dr. David Damsker, Community Health Medical Director, Wake County Human Services.
