Robotics Club The Robotics Club is a new club at Daniels MS that works through the FIRST LEGO League. The FIRST LEGO League is a world renowned organization. It is a non-profit organization and promotes the use of math and science and hopes to encourage future engineers. It is a 'global program created to get kids excited about science and technology. Geared for ages 9-14 (up to 16 outside of the U.S. and Canada), FLL utilizes theme-based Challenges to engage kids in research, problem solving, and engineering. The cornerstones of the program are its Core Values, which emphasize contributions of others, friendly sportsmanship, learning, and community involvement.' (From the FIRST LEGO website) FIRST LEGO League (FLL) puts children in charge. Teams mix curiosity and imagination with LEGO bricks, sensors, motors, and gears to invent unique, autonomous robots capable of completing various missions. Each September FLL teams around the world are provided with an annual Challenge. The Challenge is based on a set of real-world problems facing scientists and engineers today. It has two parts: a robot game and a project.
Daniels is pleased to announce the results from our very first
competition! Mr. Chit Khin and Ms. McKennie took 10 students to the
First Lego League NC State Competition in Greensboro in December, 2008.
The Daniels students made up 3 teams: the RoboCyclones, the
Dandroids and the Cyberjackets. There was a total of 80 teams
competing representing schools from all across North Carolina.
The teams competed in three categories: Teamwork, Technical and Research. All three of the Daniels teams ranked mid range 28-40 (Not bad for rookie teams)! One of the Daniels teams, the RoboCyclones, won the Perseverance (Against all Odds) award. That team was comprised of Andrew Hamrick, Roess Makgill, Jeffrey Moore and Caroline Tanner. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in Daniels' First Competition! The Robotics Club is currently accepting new members until Feb 2, 2009. All interested students should stop by and see Ms. McKennie in room 2304 for more information.
